But that does also mean it’s a story we’ve seen an awful lot of times before, not only across films, TV, and comics, but also in the previous two games in this series. Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 is taking players on another amazing adventure across Manhattan but before you start web-swinging and slinging, you’ll need to learn the controls. The latest adventure keeps much of the same button layout as the previous games, though it does include an extensive moves list with some new additions, so it’s worth taking a refresher of the controls. Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 suffered a rocky PC launch, with many players feeling the port of the game paled in comparison to its console version.

Accompanying the highly anticipated sequel at launch, Sony has confirmed Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 will have its own custom PS5 bundle along with a unique DualSense controller design to boot. Arriving on May 6, otherwise known as Free Comic Book Day, is a prequel story to Marvel’s Spider-Man 2. This slice of adventure is set to pit both Peter and Miles against a “new Super Villain whose powers they [don]t understand.” That villain being The Hood. During the May 2023 PlayStation Showcase, Insomniac Games revealed some gameplay of the upcoming title, which you can see above. Insomniac shared the Story Trailer for Spider-Man 2, giving not only a better look at the plot of the sequel, but many of the characters involved too.
These later stages are where the majority of Spider-Man 2’s thrills lay, however, as it really hits its stride late on, and emphatically wraps up a tale with miles of emotional depth that never once threatens to peter out. Speaking of boss battles, that’s one area that takes a noticeable step up from our initial tangos with Kingpin, Vulture, and the rest. One of my criticisms of the first in Insomniac’s series was how uninspired many of the showdowns felt, with their quicktime-heavy fights making a light impact. Improvements were made in Miles Morales, but here in the full-fledged sequel, boss battles really come to life. You’re made to wait a little too long for them sometimes, but when they do arrive they never fail to excite.

In keeping with Insomniac’s track record, the music behind it all is stellar, with Miles’ and Peter’s respective signature tunes playing depending on who you’re controlling. A highlight, though, is the theme that follows in Kraven’s footsteps, which bears more than a passing resemblance to Howard Shore’s Uruk-hai war march from The Lord of the Rings score. It soundtracks a world that looks stunning, even when played in performance mode at a stable 60fps as I did for most of my playthrough. Rewards for completing these various activities vary, with some ranging from genuinely exciting story teases for what’s to come, to simply gaining some tech parts to upgrade your abilities with.
Insomniac Games studio, which also has in its portfolio such titles as Ratchet & Clank or the first three installments of the series Spyro the Dragon. Gameplay-wise, Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 is very similar to the series’ previous installments. The fundamental difference is that this time both Peter Parker and Miles Morales are playable. The playable character changes during certain plot points, for example, if one of them isn’t able to arrive somewhere in time or when they need to split up.

The map gets unfogged when reaching District Completion Level 2 (from finding Collectibles) or going everywhere manually to unfog a radius around you. All of the quest-related trophies come from the story and district completion. The only thing that doesn’t come automatically from collectibles are combat trophies and a few miscellaneous open world trophies. These are all quick to do and enemies keep spawning infinitely after the story in Crimes and Mysteriums. As a sequel in a spectacular series, Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 is both blessed and cursed. Its story of two Spider-Men is a great time and a Spidey fan’s dream to play through as comic book pages are brought to life, elegantly walking the tightrope between light humour and heavier themes.

OK365 is optional, though, and not required in order to play Spider-Man 2 on PC. Much of Spider-Man 2’s environment is filled with skyscrapers as Peter and Miles swing through Marvel’s New York City. PC enhancements to ray tracing improve reflections, interiors, shadows, and provide ambient occlusion options for an increased depth. According to a PlayStation Blog post, NVIDIA DLSS Ray Reconstruction brings “more detailed ray-traced reflections and better-defined ray-traced shadows” for visual improvements.
The Spider-Bot will be crawling near the top of the South-Eastern wall. The Spider-Ham Spider-Bot is found close to the Eastern corner of the Financial District. There, look for a tall concrete building with “Damage Control” on the top with red backlighting. The Gwen Stacey Spider-Bot is located in the South-West corner of the Downtown Queens district.
That being said, I can’t help but have hoped for a few more flashes of Gotham City to make their way into New York. Obviously, what you take away from the story and its diverse cast of characters will be unique to you. On the surface, it’s another thrilling superhero story packed full of surprises, cameos, and Easter eggs – but there are deeper meanings to be found here, too.

These specs will let you run the game at 720p with 30 FPS using the Very Low graphics preset.
